I debated writing about this.

Many guides for Vocal.Media already exist, and this one will probably get buried and lost for all time. It’s just…I haven’t actually read a helpful how-to on the lived realities of the platform and how to find real, lasting, and consistent success. Most of the relevant articles ranked on Google are years old, and Vocal has changed a lot since then. As I’m writing, it’s January 2024 and Vocal has comment sections, a subscriber system, a leaderboard for various bonuses, and a thriving community.

So…here we are. How in the world do we navigate Vocal? In my experience, it’s all about community building.

I’ve been publishing my writing on Vocal regularly since May of 2023. I joined late 2022, publishing only one article. I saw zero reads — naturally — but also didn’t spend any time on the site. I didn’t read other people’s writing, I didn’t explore the communities, I didn’t even read their resource page for how to use the platform optimally (this was a big oversight!).

In that time, I’ve published over 100 stories and gotten more than 4,000 reads. The biggest breakthrough for my writing getting consistent attention was the supportive community on the platform…
